Rockstar's Rob Nelson has said GTA VI's safehouses work more like the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2. That one comparison explains most of what we know, and it also explains why some popular assumptions are still open questions.

Camps, not just beds

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the camp was a place where people lived. Characters were there when you arrived, and the camp was part of the story rather than a menu you walked into.

Applied to GTA VI, the reported details line up with that:

  • Jason and Lucia share one home. One place, and both leads live there.
  • Other characters visit. The home isn't sealed off from the rest of the cast.
  • Some bases belong to other characters. Not every base you use is yours.
  • Personal vehicles are kept at the residence. Your own car lives where you live.

So the closer model is a household you come back to than a string of properties scattered across the map.

The shared home

We track the couple's base on the Jason and Lucia safehouse page. Its location hasn't been confirmed, so the page shows no map pin yet. We'd rather leave a gap than guess and have people drive to the wrong place on launch night.

The shared home does matter for planning. If personal vehicles are kept at the residence, it's where you'll return to swap cars. And since vehicle trunks can hold weapons and outfits, your car becomes part of your kit as well as a way to get around.

Bases that belong to someone else

"Some bases belong to other characters" is the vaguest line in what's been reported, and the most interesting one. The obvious candidates are people the leads work with.

  • Cal Hampton is Jason's friend. He also works for Brian, and he spends his time at home listening in on Coast Guard comms. His place is tracked on the Cal Hampton house page. Whether it's a usable base is not confirmed.
  • Brian Heder is a veteran drug runner in the Keys, works with his wife Lori, and employs Jason. His set-up has its own page, Brian Heder's operation, again with no confirmed location.

Neither has been confirmed as a base. They're the people closest to the leads, which is why we're watching them.

What isn't confirmed

This is the list to keep in mind before you read anything else about GTA VI property:

  • The number of safehouses. Not given.
  • Buying property. Not confirmed. No real estate system has been shown.
  • Buying garages. Some fan guides say garages can be bought. Rockstar hasn't said so, and we label it rumoured.

Why would people expect it? Earlier games let you buy property, GTA Vice City in 2002 among them, so the assumption carries over. That's a fair reason to expect it. It isn't evidence. The camp comparison actually points the other way: a camp is a place you belong to, not a place you buy.

How we'll handle safehouses on the map

Every safehouse entry on the site starts as reported or rumoured. Once the game is out, we'll check each one ourselves before marking it verified, and we'll note which character it belongs to. If a base unlocks through the story, we'll say that it unlocks without saying how, so the page stays spoiler-free.

If you find a base we've missed after launch, post it in the forum with what you saw.
